Vitamin B1 is also known as Thiamin

It plays several important roles in human body. Mainly, it helps the body’s cells change carbohydrates into energy through the carbohydrate metabolism. Besides that, it also plays roles in stimulating the appetite, muscle contraction and also, the conduction of nerve impulses.

Deficiency of vitamin B1 commonly leads to the disease known as Beri beri, which is a chronic neurological and cardiovascular disease. It mainly features problems with the peripheral nerves. Also, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome which causes brain abnormalities is also common in patients with Vitamin B1 deficiency.
